You'll Get Over It
Saturday, October 11, 8:30 PM

Vincent (Julien Baumgartner) is an exceptional high school boy. He gets good grades, has a pretty girlfriend, is a champion on the school’s swim team, enjoys popularity in school and with his friends, and is beloved by his parents. All in all Vincent’s life couldn’t get better. And then he meets meets Benjamin (COME UNDONE’s Jeremie Elkaim) - moody, mysterious, irreverent, and strikingly handsome. Vincent keeps crossing paths with Benjamin until finally they have some time alone. The next day at school his locker is vandalized and spray-painted with the word “fag.” Soon , his idyllic life begins to fall apart as his friends, girlfriend, and family confront him and his teammates begin to ostracize him. What follows is a touching and very real exploration of sexual and self identity as Vincent tries to cope with these issues publically. The film also touches on how the revelation of Vincent’s sexuality affects those who care about him as they try to understand him. YOU'LL GET OVER IT is a universal and wholly original tale of our times that will speak to anyone who has ever struggled with hopes, insecurities, and disappoints on the way to self-determination.

The Italian answer to Thelma and Louise, this directorial debut of Monica Strambini tells the story of Stella and Lenni, young and in love, who work together at a gas station. The station is a happy oasis from a cruel, unsafe world where they express their love simply, nearly childishly. The girls are threatened by Lenni’s caustic, bourgeois mother who wants to destroy their relationship and one night in a heated argument she is accidentally killed and the girls have to dispose of the corpse. When the heroines leave their sanctuary and get out into the night, the road movie begins and they encounter a world, hostile to their sexuality, a nighttime adventure which launches a series of car chases, danger and action to the end.

Thomas (Stanislas Merhar), the handsome, sexually confused 23-year-old son of a renowned opera-diva (Dianne Wiest), has a penchant for personal ads. He is recruited to watch a much older man's liaison, but witnesses what turns out to be murder. Now Thomas is thrust into a maelstrom of off-the-wall encounters and mistaken identities, including an eccentric actress (Jane Birkin) who has come totally unhinged by the death of her psychiatrist, the infamous Dr. Rey. With Paris as the backdrop, a wonderful soundtrack, a whimsical homage to film and celebrity, and a plot reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best, you have the marvelous MERCI DOCTEUR REY. Look out for hilarious cameos by Jerry Hall and the grand dame of cinema Vanessa Redgrave.

Dir. Andrew Litvack
2003 France 106 min 35mm French and English with English subtitles
