Arguably the most beautiful
film in this year’s festival, Father
and Son is the new film from Russian master
Alexander Sokurov (Mother and Son
and Russian Ark).
Father and son live together
on the top floor of a rooftop apartment in an unnamed city by the sea.
They have lived alone for years in their own private, enclosed world,
filled with memories and daily rituals. Sometimes they seem like frolicking
brothers, other times like tempestuous lovers.
The son, Alexei likes sports,
sometimes behaves irresponsibly and has problems with his girlfriend.
Knowing that all sons must one day embark on their own lives, Alexei grows
conflicted with his father, and estranged
from his girlfriend.
And the father grows conflicted
with his son. Alexei’s features constantly remind him of his wife.
He cannot separate his persistent love for her from the love he harbors
for his son. Indeed, he cannot imagine his life without Alexei. The son’s
love for his father is equally deep and devoted, a filial feeling intensified
by an instinctive moral responsibility.
Both father and son find themselves
tested by their profound dilemma.
While
not really a "gay" film, Father and Son is
gorgeous, sensual and filled with stunning physical beauty that will appeal
to the queer eye.
