Russell Marsh is a successful history professor at Cascadia University in Seattle. As a teen, Russ moved away from his hometown of Rivermouth, Oregon to escape the troubles of growing up gay in a small town. Now, years later, he receives a phone call from his only contact with the family, his kid sister: their mother has died. For reasons he cannot understand he has been named executor of her estate and must return to Rivermouth to honor her final wishes. Upon his arrival, things are even more confounding than he expected and getting stranger. Russ fights his father while trying to reconcile broken ties, as a worldwide environmental and political catastrophe spins out of control to threaten the very survival of humanmankind. Russ, investigating the cult his father presides over, uncovers a connection between his family and the fate of the world. Struggling against time Russ must choose between accepting his loyalty to those he loves and his seemingly unavoidable destiny in this ancient town governed by the sea.
Filmed in Seattle and on the Oregon coast, Cthulhu, features beautiful, vibrant, torrential land and seascapes that foreshadow Russ’ ominous fate. Cthulhu is based on H. P. Lovecraft’s novella “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.” By setting the story in modern times and working with current social, ecological, and political issues, Cthulhu is a provocative new vision of the world we live in now.
