Super Amigos is a super unique feature-length documentary that follows five modern-day superheroes in Mexico City as they fight for social justice and human rights. Mexico City is not Gotham City, but if you were to run into any of the five masked activists who protect this metropolis, you’d wonder if were living inside a comic book!
These modern-day superheroes are a group of lucha libre wrestlers who have taken their fight out of the ring and into the streets of the Mexican capital. Super Barrio, Super Gay, Super Ecologista, Super Animal and Fray Tormenta are real-life masked superheroes who fight against evil slumlords, corrupt politicians, homophobia, pollution, animal rights abusers and poverty.
A recent non-governmental citizens’ committee report stated that between 1996 and 2004, a total of 126 individuals were murdered in Mexico City out of homophobic hatred. In the majority of these cases, no one has been charged or punished for these crimes. Super Gay wants to change all that by doing his best to change the attitudes towards the city’s more than two million gays and lesbians.
Though their true identity remains a mystery, the Super Amigos could easily be Mexico City’s most popular figures and ultimate salvation. |
